The tour starts in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The residence of the writer Gil y Carrasco and the building of the Town Hall. Stand out amongst the typical houses with portico you cand find in the square. The "Los Macías" House, a typical baroque building of El Bierzo, is placed next to the town hall in Jardines street.

On the right side of the Council you can find the Puerta de las Eras or Puerta del Reloj (Clock Door) that leads you to the medieval area of the city. The Clock-Tower which dates back to the middle of the 16th century, is placed over the arch and shows an interesting coat of arms of Felipe II. The Calle del Reloj is one of the most emblematic streets in Ponferrada and it converges with the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the plaza de la Encina. The most outstanding buildings in this street are the Royal Prision, at present The Bierzo Museum.

The Encina Basilica is placed at the Plaza de la Encina and takes its name from this square. The most typical streets of the city are born in this square: Rañadero which goes down to the Puente de Hierro (Iron Bridge) in La Puebla; Paraisín, at the Basilica on the left, which is the source of other streets such as Aceiterías and Tras la Encina. The street Gil y Carrasco gives a glimpse of The Templar Castle. In the same street The Coat of Arms House, The stables and San Andres Church eserves the tourist's attention.
